The Sports Archives of Finland is categorised as a private central archive. These are archives which collect documents (archival entities) of organisations and persons relating to a special field and make them available for researchers.

Finnish private central archives have founded a society called Yksityiset keskusarkistot - De privata centralarkiven ry. The webpage of the society has a link to the register of private central archives, through which searches can be made to the collections of the Sports Archives.
