History Projects

The Sports Museum of Finland offers its services for sports clubs, associations and other organisations that want to research their history. Experts of the Sports Museum have written and edited the official centenary book of the Finnish Olympic Committee, several club histories and history pages on the website of the Finnish football championship league. Our current projects include the history book of the Finnish Table Tennis Association and a research study on the early history of orienteering in Finland.

History of Finnish table tennis

The Finnish Table Tennis Association will mark its 80th anniversary in 2018 with a history book produced by the Sports Museum of Finland. The history of table tennis in Finland has not been thoroughly researched previously, especially as regards the earliest years. Written and edited by research experts of the Sports Museum, the history will draw on the official documents of the Finnish Table Tennis Association and other material kept at the archive collections of the Museum.

 Research project on early orienteering

The Sports Museum of Finland has launched a research project on the early history of orienteering in Finland at the behest of the Finnish Orienteering Association.  The project will shed light on the hitherto little researched period between the arrival of the sport to Finland in the early 20th century and the founding of the national association in 1945.  Conducted by research specialist Kalle Rantala, the project is based on extensive archive material at the Sports Museum. The research will be published by the Finnish Orienteering Association in late autumn 2016.
