Collections of Books and Magazines

The library collections of the Sports Museum of Finland contain a comprehensive range of Finnish sports literature and journals from the 19th century to the present day. The primary focus of the collections is on sports history, Olympic literature, reference books and histories of organisations and clubs. The library is open to everyone free of charge.

The magazine collections of the Sports Museum include copies of more than a 1,000 publications, the oldest of which are from the 19th century.

Note!  The greater part of the historical magazine collections is kept in a remote storage facility for the duration of the temporary removal of the Sports Museum and will not be available until 2019. List of currently available material is found here. 

Digitized materials

About 42,000 pages of archive documents have been digitized. Digitized materials are found in a database as PDF files or JPG files. The database can be accessed at document search or through the links below. Please note that the so far only a small fraction of the entire contents of the archives of the Sports Museum have been digitized.


Sports Book of the Year

The Sports Museum of Finland has since 1980 hosted the Finnish Sports Book of the Year Awards. See the winners of previous years here.   

Sports Posting of the Year  

In 2016 the Sports Book of the Year Awards introduced a prize category for the best sports-related social media posting. The winner was the skier Aino-Kaisa Saarinen for the selfie she published on Twitter.

Publication series

The Sports Museum of Finland issues 1-3 sports-related books each year. The first publication series started in 1985. In 2012 the Sports Museum introduced a separate series for research publications.
